It's Worth Getting Up Early For Super Car Sunday

Kinja'd!!!

Picked up a new lens for my camera this past week which motivated me to head on up to the weekly pissing contest in Woodland Hills, CA for the first time in a couple months. This week was the Ferrari/Maserati Marque event but every vehicle wearing Rosso Corsa or sporting a trident was upstaged by the spectacular McLaren P1 GTR. Having seen the car at the New York Auto Show under harsh trade show lighting, I was eager to get a chance to photograph it outdoors, even if there were a bunch of people milling about making good shots difficult to get. There are just so many details on this car that I love and when studied closely they really make you appreciate the level of craftsmanship at which McLaren operates.

Of course there was a variety of other stuff to check out and with my new 55-210mm zoom lens affixed to my trusty Sony NEX-7, I set about snagging detail shots of the most interesting vehicles in the lot. I fawned over some classic Ferraris, Porsches, American muscle, German muscle and everything in between. Super Car Sunday can be a bit overwhelming, especially with how many kooks there are revving their engines and shouting about how drunk they got the night before. It’s always fun to check out though, amazing people watching, entertaining cars and I’ve never left without meeting at least one person who restores my faith in the automotive enthusaist community.

Cheers,

-Andrew

* Quick note about the photos, I’m trying out some new processing techniques that involve replicating Kodak film looks for digital images and I’m interested to hear what ya’ll think. I’m in love with how this first image came out, feel that the look is perfect for the subject, reminds me of the ads I grew up studying in old issues of National Geographic.

It’s a shame car shows are always indoors with bad lighting, makes photographing the cars so much harder, especially if your camera doesn’t handle high ISO well...

Apart from that little rant, great photos, I really like them and that coming from someone who doesn’t like retro style photos. Did you use a Lightroom Filter set?

Solid pictures of interesting bits! I generally don’t take a camera to Cars/Coffee events because I like to look at the cars with my own eyes and not through an SLR the whole time. But these are the kinds of pics I take when I do take photos. I find that the details (gauges, vents, wheels, peoples’ shoes, etc.) bring back memories better than anything. I love the film effect. It gives a distinct, appealing character to your work.

Worth pointing out that when used right Kodak film looked good for a reason. Millions of dollars and many thousands of man hours went into refining the aesthetic qualuties of Kodak film. I preferred Fuji, but that’s just because Velvia/Provia made such sweet sweet love to green landscapes. For human skin tones and the human environment Kodak was the shit.

Thanks man, I love it but try not to go to heavy on it, use it on a case by case basis.

I started on film, my parents were both hobbyist photographers so there were always old cameras around the house for me to play with. I completely agree with you, Fuji made some wonderful film stocks which my mom loved for the very reason you mentioned. Growing up in Vermont she took a lot of photos of green landscapes and man did they pop on Fuji film!

Best shot =Nike mags. lol. Second best is the p1 steering wheel through the window. Love the depth. Sick composition. You have a few really great shots in there of the p1. If someone put a gun to my head and said pick one, the p1 or the 918, I’d take the gun, shoot my captor in the knees so he couldn’t chase me, and figure out how to take both. The p1 just isn’t as interesting to me in the end though. Not sure why...anyone else feel the same or am I crazy?
